Mission Statement

Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School is dedicated to the education and formation of the total person in the image of Jesus Christ.

The School

Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School is a four-year co-educational institution that is operated under the direction of the Catholic Diocese of Wichita.
The school was created by the 1971 merger of two college preparatory Catholic high schools in east Wichita. Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School (founded in 1957) was a school for young men which was established and operated by the Jesuit order of priests, and Mount Carmel Academy (founded in 1886) was a school for young women that was owned and operated by the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School is accredited by North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, the State of Kansas and the National Catholic Education Association.

Educational Philosophy

At Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School, we seek to provide opportunities for all students to be successful in their educational endeavors. There are three curriculum tracks from which students and their parents can select the course of studies that best suits their strengths and objectives - Cum Laude, College Prep and General Studies.

Cum Laude Curriculum

The Cum Laude program is designed for students who wish to pursue an accelerated program culminating with the reception of a Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School Honors Diploma. It requires a commitment to take the most rigorous course of studies that the school offers, including Honors classes in all of the core subject areas. A grade of B or better in all courses is required to remain in the Cum Laude program.

College Prep Curriculum

All core courses are offered as Honors courses, in which the instructional material is covered at a more challenging pace. Most students select a curriculum from the College Prep curriculum that includes both Honors and regular (non-accelerated) courses based upon their individual strengths and interests.

General Studies

The General Studies curriculum is offered for students who tend to struggle academically. Included in this track is a study skills course which helps students to develop appropriate study skills, and involves the teacher in closely monitoring and guiding the students to succeed in other classes. An Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is developed for many of our students, in consultation with the students, their parents and appropriate school professionals. The ILP's serve as blueprints for teachers to provide accommodations to students who have learning differences.

Facilities

Kapaun Mt. Carmel's facilities were constructed in 1961, with an additional building housing the primary gymnasium and classrooms built in 1972. The current facility comprises approximately 110,000 square feet of space.

The facilities are being expanded and improved under a five-phase Facility Master Plan. Phase 1, which includes the construction of a new 50,000 square foot science and technology wing, along with the renovation of the school's existing classroom wing, will be completed by August 2, 2002.

Future phases of the Facility Master Plan will include a new entrance and administrative offices, an expansion of the fine arts facilities, the addition of a student commons and the construction of a new gymnasium.

A dedication ceremony for the new and renovated structures, and an open house will be held on September 15, 2002.
