First Place Essay (Student):

This scholarship is important because I cannot afford to go to Holy Savior without it. My mom works very hard but they don't pay her much. The scholarship will give me a chance to get a better education to be a good person for a good job when I grow up. My aunt has told me that there are a lot of nice people at Holy Savior. I think there are going to be less people who want to pick on me than people who want to be friends with me. I like Sunday school and I have heard that they teach about Jesus. I know Jesus helps people, and if I believe in Him, he'll help me, too.

Second Place Essay (Parents):

My name is Cynthia, and Ashley is my thirteen-year-old neice who I am raising. I believe learning is a lifelong process, and Ashley's education is the foundation for the rest of her life.

I would count it a blessing for Ashley to have an opportunity to attend a private school -- one that can provide structure -- a private school whose main emphasis is academics, discipline and Christian principles -- one where she would not share a room with 20-25 other classmates -- one where she could feel safe and protected. I would like Ashley to go to a school unlike most public schools where the environment is threatened by the pervasiveness of drugs and gang violence and where the need to concentrate on corralling behaviors, the color of your clothes, or the brand name of your shoes is addressed more than academics.

I have an investment in Ashley's future. Children First: CEO Kansas also shares in the investment in our children. The presence of the scholarship fund authenticates that. This scholarship program is important to my family and me because it will provide Ashley an opportunity to attend a private school. Without a helping hand, our family cannot otherwise afford it. Like anyone, I expect a return on my investment. As a recipient of this scholarship, Ashley's chance for a successful future will be greatly increased.

First Place Essay (Parents):

I, Linda Kinnard, am a single parent. I am raising my two children in the northeast area of Wichita where drugs and gangs are very bad. I have one son who is 12-years-old and I pray daily for his life because of the peer pressure around him. We desire to move one day but income does not allow it at this time. We have no father figure to instill male values except at church. Their father got involved in drugs and he doesn't play a part in their life. By faith in God, I have been able to keep my children in church so they can see some positive people doing something else besides selling drugs. This scholarship would be a blessing to me and to my children. They are praying that the money will come in so they can go to a better school. My son attends a private school now because he is a slow learner. I have been sacrificing to pay for his school. My daughter wants so much to attend a Christian school, too, but I was not able to pay for her. This is not only my desire but it is their desire to attend good schools, too. Thanks so much!!
